What other music can I listen to other than classical that will make my baby more intelligent?

miZZkrisTinA asked the question:

I am right around that time where my baby can start hearing things outside the womb (im 20 weeks) so I want to start listening to music thats beneficial to my baby but I really don’t like classical music, is there anything else that is proven to make babies more intelligent?

They did studies where they have found this to be a myth. Classical music doesn’t make your baby smarter. But, I think it is probably nice for them to listen to regardless. It is soothing and this could also soothe them after they are born. I would just listen to what you like. Sing aloud! Your baby will love hearing your voice now and after birth as well!

I think that stuff is a load of garbage (no offense) my daddy played John Cougar Melloncamp, Tom Petty, and Eric Clapton while my mom was pregnant and I turned out pretty smart. =)

Reading to your baby even in utero will help a child develop. When born, don’t just plop him in front of the TV watching Baby Einstein or in front of the radio to Chopin…you have to interact with a baby to encourage and stimulate its brain development. Intelligence, while also environmental, is also genetic. Those studies that claim there’s a sure fire way to smartness are usually just lies.

Any music will benifit your baby. Just don’t play it too loud. Pick music with nice steady rythems. I played 80’s music to my daughter before she was born. She is 2 1/2, can count to 13, count down from 10, knows all her shapes, colors, animals, fruits, veggies, and body parts. She was potty trained right after her 2nd birthday. I can’t say that playing music made all these things possible, or that she is smarter than any other baby, but to see her dance with perfect rythem is great entertainment. Good luck to you and congratulations.

“It’s a common myth that listening to classical music will make your baby smart.”

This myth has not been proven to make your baby intelligent/smart. However, there are other ways that have been proven. The link is provided below.

Recent studies have shown this whole business of “educating” your fetus to be a load of bunk (insert expletive). There is NO evidence to suggest that any of this nonsense has any effect of future development, so I really wouldn’t worry so much what you were listening to…

There is essentially no credible research that documents the relationship between pre-natal (or neo-natal) music exposure and intelligence. It’s a nice idea, but it doesn’t seem to actually work.

Eat a healthy diet, don’t launch into any new, highly intensive exercise regimens, and be ready to talk to your baby when she or he is born.

I sang to my daughter everyday since the moment I found out I was preggo til now. She responds amazingly to it. At bath time, we sing and she sits there and smiles and kicks. : )

Any music, anything will help the progress of your child.

I don’t know how much proof there is out there that any kind of music heard in utero makes babies more intelligent. There are too many factors to consider…. including the fact that intelligent and highly educated people are more likely to expose themselves and their unborn baby to music (as well as to take better care of themselves while pregnant, be less exposed to health hazards, etc), and smarter parents tend to have smarter kids! So who knows what causes what.

That being said, exposure to all kinds of music will help encourage your child to appreciate music after they are born and will stimulate his/her brain activity in utero. Reading out loud can do this too. So play classical, jazz, country, rap, hip hop, dance music, whatever you can. A variety of music will help him/her distinguish the differences, hear the rhythms, etc. YOu might even be able to tell what he/she likes since babies will kick more to things they feel strongly about (so if they love it or hate it).

    Have fun!
