Can someone give me a source for classical music with notable drum sections?

oldyogi asked the question:

I’m teaching a group of children who have discovered the wonder of drums and wanted to provide them with a wealth of music that includes drums from kettles to bass to tympany etc. We’ve already been listening to some world music with different drum expressions but I’d like some classical to add to the mix. Help?

The best introduction would be Bolero, from Maurice Ravel.
Stravinsky is also a good source. For example Rites of Spring, but it`s too long for children and they will not maintain their attention for long.
    Stick to Bolero.

Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” has a nice percussion section solo. Another (but more obscure piece) would be Rodion Schchedrin’s “Carmen Suite” (written for percussion soli and orchestra).

Finally, for the most bizarre experience, listen to the piece “Ionization” (for 12 percussionists) by Edgar Varese. It will likely frighten some of the kids (it is loud & scary and features the use of the air raid siren as a percussion instrument) but it will certainly make an impression!

(Other fun pieces to play for them would be some of the percussion music of John Cage, such as the various pieces entitled “Construction” (First Construction, Second Construction, etc.) which use percussion instruments like car brake drums and conch shells.)

look at and you may get more ideas than you can ever use.

Have you played the 1812 overture for them? that is percussion on steroids.

Carmina Burana by Carl Orf is one of the biggies. You will know it when you hear it… it is on about 1000 commercials!
