Is it true that listening to classical music is good for your baby?

My Eggo is Preggo asked the question:

I am 23 weeks pregnant & have been told that I should play classical music for the baby to hear. Why is this? & do you have any suggestions for songs/composers?

Yes it’s beneficial - it’s been shown that babies who listen to classical music are more intelligent.

Mozart is always a popular choice. They sell CDs of classical music just for babies, with selections chosen by music therapists.

Check your local New Age store if your bookstore or music store don’t sell them.

Supposedly there’s a “Mozart effect” that will make your unborn baby smarter. It’s junk science, though.

Playing music won’t do any harm, of course. And it could possibly influence the things that your baby will prefer to hear after birth. But as far as real benefits to the baby, there are none.

Me and my wife used Mozart for babies. If you go to a maternity store or hell even wallmart has Classical CDs for babies. I asked the doctor the same question, and he said “well it cant hurt”. LOL

Classical music is supposed to be more relaxing than rock or other forms to music. It relaxes you which might have good effect to your baby. Of course if you are stressed, it won’t do your baby any good. ;) So the answer might be a YES.

Supposedly classical music helps the neurons on the brain form connections. It is not known if this would work in utero as the music would be muffled by the amniotic fluid. It is not going to do any harm.
I fully believe that playing classical music to a baby after it is born will help the neuron connections form.
There is a connection between a child taking music lessons and being good at math so I encouraged my daughter to play classical music for my grandson.
Talking to your baby will also help the neural connections form.
Any Mozart or Beethoven should be good.
